Life is good today: One of my own

When you raise your kids in a small town it’s not unusual to collect a few extras over time. So it has been with me and my late husband David.

Among our extra kids was Ryan Nunberg.

Ryan and David teased each other. They were always finding a challenge in which to compete. Whether it be arm wrestling or shooting pool, one always tried to best the other. Ryan was with me through David’s illness and his passing.

Before David passed, we talked about things he’d like done. He had this fancy pool cue in a leather case that Ryan always admired. He said to make sure that Ryan got the cue.

I told Ryan to come by because David had left something for him. When I handed it to him he smiled. “I thought it would be the cue,” he said.

I called him Sonny. He called me Mama.

Suddenly, Ryan passed away. My heart is more than sad.

His life was not without challenges but he kept trying. He was a good man who adored his kids and his dad, and cherished his dog.

The last time I saw him he said “love you mama,” as I walked away.

I loved him too. He was like one of my own.

I send my love and my prayers to his family and friends who will miss him.

The year 2022 was filled with moments of sorrow and moments of joy. Challenges have been met, losses have been felt, and magical memories have been made.

As we move forward into 2023, I pray for good.

Yesterday, I watched television evangelist Joyce Meyer. She presented the notion that we would be better off if we found someone to help at least once a week. I believe she is right. No New Year’s resolution for me. Instead I have set the goal of helping.

God bless you all and Happy New Year.

Life is good today.
