Colusa High School’s Environmental Sciences Academy took its juniors and sophomores on two overnight trips in the last month.

For juniors, their experience through nature started around 7:45 AM on Thursday, April 28, when they set off for the San Francisco Bay with sack lunches and sleeping bags in hand.
Students arrived at the Marine Institute and departed on a vessel, to engage in hands-on adventures, using scientific methods and tools.

After four hours of exploration, the group of travelers left for Joseph Grant State Park to camp for the night, where they enjoyed stargazing.

The next voyage started at 8 AM the following day to catch a ride on the Tiburon Ferry to Angel Island. The environmentalists toured the beach, saw the immigration station, and encountered various animals, even a coyote at their campsite.

After the tour, the group returned to Colusa tuckered out from the eventful, yet interesting trip full of new knowledge about the nature around them.

For the sophomores, adventures awaited them on Thursday, May 5, as they departed the high school for Fort Bragg, where the weather was cold and the beaches were beautiful.

Students went tidepooling to learn about aquatic life at MacKerricher State Park, before the night ended with s’mores and teachers took out groups of kids for their own special activity involving chilly Fort Bragg.

“Overall, students had a lot of fun,” said Jaspreet Shoker, a senior who helped out on the trip. ■
