County continues local drought emergency

Following one of the driest years on record, and with near record low storage in California’s largest reservoirs, the Colusa County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday adopted a resolution extending the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office declaration of a drought emergency countywide.

Lt. Russ Jones said the re-certification of the emergency every 60 days since June 22, 2021 means that drought conditions have continued – and has resulted in a number of domestic wells running dry. The County Emergency Household Water Program was activated earlier this spring to provide potable water once or twice a week to those experiencing dry wells due to drought.

“We are still serving 20 homes,” Jones said. “There are 14 deployed tanks. We also have four private tanks we are just supplying water for.”

As of Tuesday, there were no tanks waiting to be placed, but two more households whose wells are low or pumping “muddy water,” are in the process of being vetted for the program. ■
