It’s simple to say thank you. You’d think so. But apparently some folks don’t see the need.
There are givers and there are takers in this world.
The givers just get joy from giving and keep doing it even when not appreciated. Takers have a “gimme” attitude. They expect to get. They see no need to say thank you and they certainly don’t see the need to give back.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.
My friend Mark Miller is a giver. In the last few years, he has struggled with health issues. Lately, they have escalated and he’s been in the hospital and eventually a rehab facility. He could lay there and feel sorry for himself, but that is not what he’s been doing. Instead, he’s been making little wooden animals and giving them away. Mark says giving to others is what makes him happy.
I’ve often been the recipient of Mark’s kindness, so I know he is genuine.
This week, we set out our wooden turkey – made for us by Mark. He’s a great giant of a bird and looks wonderful as a fall decoration on our front porch.
Mark has made more than 160 of the critters, and he tells me ours is likely the last one he’ll make. It is a treasure for sure.
Also, tucked away and slowly being doled out are the last jars I have of Mark’s homemade marmalade – also a gift.
Kindness goes a long way. Mark is a master of kindness. We can all learn from him.
The challenge for this week is to be gracious, thankful, and giving. Be the person you were taught to be. Be a Mark.
Life is good today. ■
