Colusa’s Gonzalez, Williams’ Santillan advance to NSCIF track finals

Despite setting four personal records in four separate events at the Northern Section Division III track finals last Friday at West Valley High School in Cottonwood, only two county athletes were able to advance to this Friday’s section meet.

Colusa senior Salma Gonzalez qualified for the section championships in the shot put, with a winning toss of 32’-5, as did Williams’ junior Isabella Santillan, who won the 3200 meters in a time of 13:00.49.

Both athletes also recorded second place finishes, as Gonzalez posted a mark of 81’-6 in the discus and Santillan crossed the line in a time of 5:57.61 in the 1600 meters, although neither was enough to move on.

RedHawk freshman Rajdeep Shoker was second to Santillan in the varsity women’s 3200 meters, then set a personal record in the 1600 (6:06.96), which was good for third, but still short of qualifying,

Two Colusa sophomores, Danica Chavez and Alena Sanchez, finished third in the 400 meters and long jump, respectively.

Chavez set a personal record of 1:03.71, while Sanchez landed a jump of 15’-0.

In the varsity men’s competition, Pierce junior Eduardo Cuellar was second in the long jump with a career best mark of 19’4, while Colusa sophomore Benji Granados was the runner-up in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:08.85.

Third place finishes went to the Bears’ David Aguirre, who ran a personal record of 54.33 in the 400 meters along with RedHawk freshman Christopher Ruiz, with a time of 11.71 in the 100 meters. ■
