Baseball round up: Teams return to action after rain delays

Pierce’s Daniel Rubio had a big day at the plate in the Bears win over Williams on Mar. 17

Pierce 0 – Gridley 20 (3/16)
Pierce 20 – Williams 3 (3/17)
Pierce 6 – Lower Lake 11 (3/18)

Last week was an up and down one for the Bears, who after being shutout by Gridley in a run ruled shortened affair, took out their frustrations on visiting Williams, and then finished up with a loss to Lower Lake in a 10-inning marathon.

After getting no hit by the Bulldogs, Pierce feasted on Yellowjacket pitching the following day, as they banged out 20 hits including 10 for extra bases.

Danny Rubio had himself a day against the ‘Jackets, finishing 3 for 4 with four runs scored, four RBI, and three doubles.

Rodney Hofhenke picked up three hits, including two doubles, and two RBI, in addition to going four innings on the hill, where he scattered six hits and struck out six.

Easton Richins and Michael Acevedo each registered three hits and drove in three runs apiece, while Brayden Hoebel and Ky Wooldridge both went 2 for 3.

The game against Lower Lake ended in disappointment for the Bears, as the Trojans put five runs on the board in the top of the 10th inning to steal the win.

No other statistics were made available.

Pierce (2-3) was slated to play in Willows on Mar. 21, then square off against Delta at Sutter Health Park on Mar. 22 before they return home to complete the Sacramento Valley League series with the Honkers on Mar. 24.

Colusa 9 – Durham 0 (3/17)
Colusa 9 – Vacaville Christian 8 (3/18)

The RedHawks got a sterling performance on the mound from Luke Kalfsbeek to shutout the Trojans in their first game last week, then survived a sixth inning rally by Vacaville Christian in a contest on the road last Saturday.

In Durham, Kalfsbeek fanned 13 of the 19 batters he faced and yielded just two hits in six innings of work before giving way to Sutter Moss, who struck out two in the final frame to preserve the shutout.

At the plate, Colusa pounded out 11 hits led by Bo Coronado and Seth Kalisuch, who had two apiece.

Traveling to Vacaville last Saturday, the RedHawks looked to have a comfortable lead heading into the sixth inning, but the Falcons put seven runs on the board in the frame before Moss took the mound in the bottom of the seventh and restored order by retiring the side.

Will McCoy went 3 for 4 while Moss, Kalfsbeek, and Coronado each picked up two hits and drove in a run.

Colusa (6-1) was set to open Sacramento Valley League play this week when it hosted Live Oak on Tuesday, then squeezed in a non-conference game at home against Woodland Christian, before hitting the road to complete the series with the Lions on Friday.

Maxwell 0 – Willows 1
Maxwell 4 – Willows 5

With the rain finally passing, the Panthers resumed play with a doubleheader in Willows last Friday, where they suffered two narrow losses.

Maxwell went hitless in the first game against the Honkers, who scored the game’s only run in the second inning.

However, extra frames were required in the nightcap, although, unfortunately for the Panthers, Willows walked off in the bottom of the eighth.

Robert Waite and Massey Baker accounted for Maxwell’s only hits, while Brody Jones knocked in a run.

This week, Maxwell (1-6) had a home game scheduled with Kelseyville’s JV squad on Monday and a matchup against Redding Christian on Tuesday before heading to Palo Cedro to complete the series with the Lions today.

Friday night, the Panthers will gear up for their Glory Days Alumni Game, with first pitch at 6:45 PM.

Williams 3 – Pierce 20

In just their fourth game of the season, the Yellowjackets could not find the St. Patrick’s Day luck, as they suffered a run-rule shortened loss in Arbuckle.

Ty Howell doubled while Jonathan Benitez, Miguel Guzman, Alexis Velazquez, Jose Valdez, and Leo Hernandez each had a hit in the game.

Still searching for its first win of the season, Williams was in Olivehurst on Monday for a doubleheader, before returning home to face Live Oak on Wednesday. ■
