Maxwell volleyball ousts Happy Camp

Maxwell’s Fatima Cano hits for a kill in the No. 1 seeded Panthers win over No. 8 Happy Camp in the first round of the NSCIF Division VII playoffs on Oct. 27.

History repeated itself in Maxwell, when for the second year in a row the Panthers brought an end to the season for visiting Happy Camp in the first round of the Northern Section CIF Division VII playoffs.

Although last season the Indians took a set off Maxwell, this time around was a completely different story, as the reigning Division VII champions and current No. 1 seeded Panthers needed less than an hour to vanquish the visitors 25-8, 25-10, 25-11.

No. 8 Happy Camp, which had only played 12 matches coming into last Thursday night and finished fourth in the Evergreen League, was simply no match for a stronger and more experienced Maxwell squad.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Emma Hendrix, who tallied a team-high seven kills, doled out 17 assists, and served five aces.

Kennidy Moss and Fatima Cano pitched in on the attack with six kills apiece, as did Jocelyn Lazarus, who added five.

At the service line, Sydnee Wilson accounted for five aces, while Natalie Velazquez closed out the match with the final three points from the stripe.

Bailee Haywood made nine digs for the Panthers (21-7), who have won seven of their last eight matches and are now riding a five-game win streak.

This week, Maxwell squared off against No. 4 Hayfork (9-9) on Nov 1, with the winner advancing to the championship game on Saturday against either No. 2 Chester or No. 3 Big Valley.

The Division VII title game is scheduled to begin at 11 AM at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro. â–
