Miguel Fernandez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home on June 10, 2025, in Colusa, California, at the age of 80, following a long illness and a gradual decline from Alzheimer’s disease.
Born on May 9, 1945, on a ranch near Coalcomán, Michoacán, Mexico, Miguel was one of twelve children born to Miguel Fernandez Rojas and María del Refugio Madrigal Valencia. Raised on a ranch, Miguel developed the strong work ethic, humility, and deep sense of family and faith that would define his life.
He immigrated to California in 1968, seeking opportunities and a better future. On December 25, 1971, he married the love of his life, María Fernandez Reyna, and together they started their family in 1973 in Colusa. Miguel worked a various jobs before joining Colusa Rice Company in 1982, where he took great pride in his work for nearly three decades, retiring in 2010 as a respected foreman.
A devout Catholic, Miguel was ordained a deacon in 1995 and faithfully served the congregation at Our Lady of Lourdes Church for 25 years. His ministry was grounded in compassion, service, and
unwavering faith.
Miguel had many simple joys in life. He enjoyed watching old Western movies, grilling carne asada for family gatherings and laughing with his loved ones. He could be counted on for a playful moment or a kind word. Above all, Miguel cherished reading his Bible daily, finding peace and guidance in the Word of God.
Known for his generosity and kindness, Miguel was a man who put others first. As a child, he sold handmade bags to buy gifts for his mother and sisters. As an adult, he quietly supported newly arrived immigrants, helping them find work and offering financial support to those in need. He gave without expectation— led by a noble and loving heart.
Throughout his illness, Miguel was cared for by his devoted wife, María, who stood by him with strength, perseverance, and love.
He is survived by his wife María; daughters Mayra, Sonia, and Maria Argelia “Haley”; adopted son RW Carpenter; grandchildren AC, Miah, Lucia, Kiet, Juliet and Emilia; and siblings Ana and Manuel. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Miguel Oscar, and other cherished
