Joe was raised in the Azores Islands. He was part of a large family of 10 siblings.

He went into the military at a young age, and he worked very hard. He came to America in 1963 after marrying his Wife Minnie. He worked for a short time at Gladding McBeen Pottery in Lincoln, CA. Joe was a loving Father who provided for his Family. He loved his Portuguese Heritage and volunteered many years in the Saint Anthony Holy Ghost Festa in Princeton California where he was President for a year. He had a huge love for fishing. Our vacations each year consisted of fishing for smelt in Fort Bragg at Wages Creek and the surrounding beaches. He worked very long hours rice farming and kept going after work taking care of his huge garden and grapes that ran across the home property. He was very proud of making his own wine (Portuguese Diesel) each year along with growing fresh fruits and vegetables from his garden.
