Nellie Ann Carey • 06/28/1931 – 02/26/2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mom, Nellie Ann Carey who passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025 at her home in Bakersfield, California at the age of 93.
Nellie Ann was born in Colusa, California on June 28, 1931, to Edward Joseph (Eddy) Highstreet and Isabel Busch Highstreet. She attended Colusa schools and graduated from Colusa High School in 1949. After briefly attending Yuba College she married her high school sweetheart, William (Sonny) Weber in 1950. They settled in Colusa and shared four children between them.
In the late sixties Nellie Ann returned to and graduated from Yuba College with a business degree. She then went to work in a local law firm as a Legal Secretary. In the mid-seventies, she transferred to Colusa High School as the Attendance Secretary.
Nellie Ann married Robert (Bob) Carey in 1976 and in 1985 they relocated to Bakersfield, California. Once in Bakersfield she took a position in the Biology Department at Cal State Bakersfield where she remained until her retirement in 1996.
As a member of Butte View Racquet Club she discovered her lifelong love for tennis. Always being one of the top three players at the club, she loved traveling around northern California and competing in local
club tournaments.
Nellie Ann was a devoted mother. She was always supportive of her children’s activities. From being a Den Mother of a Cub Scout pack to one of the loudest fans at sporting events she was always there to cheer her children on. In fact, she met Bob through the Yuba College booster club while she was in charge of fundraising for the football team. One of her greatest joys is that her home was a gathering place of sorts for many local kids and friends, some of them calling her “mom”. She always wanted to make sure that kids had a place to fit in and all
were welcome.
Nellie Ann was preceded in death by her parents Eddy and Isabel, her husband Bob and her son Mitchell. She is survived by her three other children, Greg (Lynn), Mark (Lisa), Michele Shain (Mike), as well as seven grandchildren and nine
great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on April 9, 2025 at Mc Nary-Moore Funeral Services from 4pm – 6pm followed by a rosary at 6pm. A Catholic service is scheduled on April 10, 2025 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes church with graveside service at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. The reception will take place at the Colusa Golf &
Country Club.
