Margaret D. Abele • 12/21/1931 – 1/23/2024

Margaret D. Abele passed away at her home on January 23, 2024 and has joined her best friend and the love of her life, John. Margaret, also known as Mouse, Mom, Grammie and Gram, fully devoted herself to her children, their families and dear friends.
Born Margaret Virginia Doherty on December 21, 1931 to James Vincent Doherty and Lella Belle Ball Doherty, she grew up on the west side of the Sutter Buttes, and always felt a strong connection to this special place. Her middle and high school years were spent away at boarding school at Holy Rosary in Woodland, and San Domenico School in San Rafael.
After graduating from the University of Oregon with a degree in history, Margaret began teaching in the Petaluma City Schools District. But a chance encounter with John Abele, during a brief visit to her parents’ ranch in Arbuckle, changed the course of her life.
She and John embarked on a lifetime filled with love, work, family, hunting, travel, fun and adventures. Her hands-on involvement with the family ranch as an almond and rice farmer was instrumental.
All those close to her hold deep respect and love for a remarkable spirit. Her never-ending curiosity was accompanied by a strong will and frequent reliance on “mind over matter.” Margaret was a teacher and planner by nature and she never tired of seeking opportunities for her children, grandchildren and friends, opening up a world for them to explore through projects, books, travel and friendships. Gram passed on a love of plants, gardening, cooking, architecture, conversations and a good party. Most of all, her family and friends will miss Margaret’s ability to listen, question and offer wise and loving words when needed. Her understanding and compassion for others was profound.
Margaret Abele is survived by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren: Kerry (Charlie) Verutti, and their children Phoebe, Tracey and Tony; Shannon (Dr. Robbin Cohen) Cohen and their children Mallory and Whitney; Brita (Daniel) Hodgins and their daughter Pippa; Amy (Thom) Stocking and their children Chance and Sydney and John Roy (Bethany) Abele and their children Ryan and Adrianna.
Margaret’s husband John S. Abele passed away on May 17, 2011. Her siblings Mary Ellen Bichard, Michael Doherty, and Maureen (Lady Bug) Doherty also predeceased Margaret.
At Margaret’s request, a private family service was held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Arbuckle with internment at Mary’s Cemetery District, Woodland.
The family asks that remembrances honoring Margaret be made to one of the following: Holy Cross Catholic Church, Arbuckle Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of your choice.
