Maxwell 4-H hosts Market Goat Field Day

The countdown is on and the final weeks of preparation have begun for the 2023 Junior Livestock Show and Auction.

With just a little over five weeks until the event, Colusa County livestock exhibitors are preparing for one of the most competitive livestock shows in the northern region.

On Sunday, April 30, members from Colusa, Maxwell, Arbuckle, and Princeton 4-H participated in a first-time event at the Maxwell High School rodeo arena.

Connor Murphy, Hannah Azevedo, and Laney Parker volunteered as educators and livestock judges to prepare exhibitors for the fair.

“It’s been about four years since I was in the show ring at the Colusa Fair, but I will never forget those who helped me along my 10-year journey,” stated Hannah Azevedo. “Anything to help the kids prepare and feel confident in that ring is exactly why I volunteer.”

Around 20 members signed up for the event, which included showmanship practice and tips, educational information, and a small jackpot style show.

“This was a great event, very organized and educational,” said Amelia Oliveros. “I feel better sending my daughter in the ring for fair as a first-timer.”

Organized by Cheri Azevedo, Maxwell 4-H Market Goat leader, the day’s activities lasted for a little over two hours and was a huge success.

“It’s all about helping the kids,” said Azevedo. “I’ve been volunteering for over 10 years now with Maxwell 4-H and as long as I am able to help, I will.”

Exhibitors ranged from ages 9-17 and were given the chance to compete in a similar fashion as they will in June at the Jr. Livestock Show during the Colusa County Fair.
Winners from the day were as follows:

Class 1 : Catalina Oliveros, first, Arbuckle; TJ Winn, second, Princeton. Class 2: Aileen Meyers, first, Arbuckle; Sophia Oliveros, second, Arbuckle. Class 3: Bianca Minutti, first, Maxwell; Mary Doherty, second, Arbuckle.

Overall Winners were Aileen Myers, first; Bianca Minutti, second; and Mary Doherty, third.
The day’s event was made possible by generous volunteers, Adrian Murphy, Ana Minutti, Dale Johnson, and Allie Wills.

Master showman of the day, Myers, was awarded ribbons and a locally made “goat hat,” donated by the Karlonas family. ■
