Lady Panthers continue winning streak

Emma Hendrix stretches to make the out at first base in their win over Core Butte May 3.

With the announcement of playoff brackets from Northern CIF Friday, the Lady Jackets added two more big wins to their record last week.

Williams played Core Butte on their home field, on May 3, and on the road against Redding Christian on May 9.

A prior season match-up against Core Butte brought the Lady Panthers a 16-1 win on the road, however, their second match-up in the 5-Star League showed a much tougher opponent for Maxwell.

The two teams stayed evenly matched, not only in the batters box but from the pitcher’s mound, with a tie score of one point each after three innings.

A line drive by Jocelyn Lazarus was the winning run for the Lady Panthers, with Kimmi Garrison crossing the plate late in the fourth. Lazurus earned the victory in the circle for Maxwell, allowing two hits and one run over seven innings, striking out nine.

Garrison went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Panthers in a 2-1 victory.

On the road, May 6, Lazarus threw a gem of a game, allowing zero runs.

Paige Vierra’s double in the first inning put Maxwell on the board, followed by three runs tallied in the second inning, led by Lazarus, Shelby Dunlap, and Bailee Haywood. The Lady Panthers totaled 11 hits in the game with multiple hits by Madi Pearson, Garrison, and Vierra.

Lazurus got the win for Maxwell, allowing five hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out eight, and walking one in for the 9-0 win.

Maxwell currently sits third in the Five-Star League and first in their division with a 20-6 record. Playoff seed and schedules are to be announced May 13. ■
