Genevieve Bernice Burrows, known to everyone as Aunt Gen, 82, of Colusa, CA, died on Feb. 26, 2022, in Chico, CA. She was born Nov. 26, 1939 to Jason Mitchell and Nettie Baker Mitchell in Cachil DeHe Reservation. She was a member of the Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun of Colusa, CA. She is survived by her daughters: Delphine Ellis of Lakeport, CA, and Yolanda Burrows of Elk Creek, CA. 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and a great extent of nieces and nephews. Her sisters-in-law; Harlene Mitchell of Willows, CA, and Mamie Powell of Elk Creek, CA.
In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and making quilts and also doing her crossword puzzles, playing Bingo at times, playing her collection of CDs, and loved to travel. She was deeply involved in her cultural ways, especially watching her grandkids and the young generation embracing their cultural ways. She will be remembered for her laughter and talks about how it was in the old days, and her kindness was un-speakable. She was a wonderful person who not only touched our hearts but by everyone who crossed her path.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Jason Mitchell and Nettie Baker Mitchell, her sisters; Agnes Burrows and Eileen Berryessa, her brothers, Harold “Tom” Mitchell, and Everett “Butch” Mitchell. Her husband Thomas Burrows and her daughters; Flortina Burrows, Gwendolyn Burrows, and her grandson Warren McCloud.
A wake will be held on Sunday, March 6, beginning at 2 PM at her home on 56 Wintun Road in Colusa. The burial will take place on Tuesday, March 8, at 12 PM at Colusa Cemetery. ■
