Lady ‘Jackets best Maxwell to stay undefeated

Williams High’s Gabby Lopez kills a ball during a game against Princeton on September 2. Williams remained unbeaten on the season by sweeping the Eagles and Maxwell Panthers last week.

The Williams varsity volleyball season has not seen a long winning streak since 2004 under coach Vanessa Scroggins, when the Lady ‘Jackets started with a  7-0 season. Williams pushed themselves to an 8-0 start with a second county rival win in Maxwell on Sept 9.

The Jackets captured the victory in just 3 sets with match scores of: 25-19, 25-22 and 25-19.

“Very close sets,” said spectator Leighann Lohman “Nicely played.”

Both teams came to the court with determination and fought hard for each side out, but Williams’ Gaby Lopez set the pace for the Jackets with 12 kills, five aces and two blocks. Ashley Garcia contributed five kills and three aces while Giselle Vega had 16 assists and two aces towards the win.

“We are getting better with each game,” said Trinity Tungasmita, of Williams. “This team played well together in 2019, when we went 21-3 on the season. We missed league champs by one game and we are looking to claim that title this year.”

Maxwell stats were unavailable.

Lady Panthers traveled to Paradise on Monday, improving their record to 6-2 with a 3-1 match win over Paradise Adventist Academy. Maxwell faced the Hamilton Braves on Tuesday and will host their first conference match-up Sept. 21 at 6 PM against Redding Christian.

Williams hosted Los Molinos on Tuesday and will travel to Portola to commence their first conference match-up on Sept. 21 at 5:30 PM.
